When the world first heard about the asteroids, it was already too late.

Ten arduous years later, Mick and his small group of eight had adapted to the new way of things. With no clean running water, power, or forms of communication, the Earth went backward, taking with it almost everything they held dear. Survivors like Mick were forced to do the best they could with what they had. Because in the post-Impact world, alternatives were a luxury that no one could afford.

Now a deadly virus threatens those who were unfortunate enough to survive.

With the clock ticking down on their lives, Mick will navigate the deceitful webs spun by those that oppose his drive for salvation. And along his quest to prevent another catastrophe, Mick will rediscover what it truly means to be human.

Impetus does away with the genre's tendency to dwell on the coming catastrophe, to instead examine the very-real human experience and condition left behind by a world-changing disaster.

Impetus eBook Scott M Sullivan

This novel is OK, but be forewarned the synopsis talks about meteorites destroying civilization and how the aftermath changes the environment for the worse for the survivors; but the story picks up 10 years after the destruction. So there is no story about survival during the destruction of the earth by meteorites and what happens but picks up 10 years after. Even then, the 8 survivors led by Mick seem to do things that play against their interests. When they are threatened by a so called King of the Rubble who envisions himself as the leader of Boston with two of his henchman, rather than dispatch them after the threats of" we'll see you again" and snide remarks about Mick's 14 year old daughter, they let them leave only to have to deal with his gang later. So while the novel was fairly well written and an interesting read, the character development of the others outside of Mick was shallow, their actions were illogical and I couldn't sympathize with their plight or care one way or the other how they ultimately make it in this new not so brave world.

Impetus eBook Scott M Sullivan Reviews

Nice interpretation of meteor destruction and how groups deal with the aftermath. Throw in a mad scientist mucking things up and you've got a nice little story to keep you involved. Sometimes I thought there were too many stories in one, but they all came together nicely toward the end. I LOVE that the writer used ONE book to tell a story - THANKS for that! Nicely written and good characters.
The was an edge-of-your seat kind of book. After meteorites destroy the earth, clusters of humans still exist. Mick and his group are good people. Rubble King and his group are ruthless and diabolical. Everything changes for the two groups when Mick encounters Solomon, a young man kept captive and tortured by Rubble King and his thugs. I was pleased to see there were't any zombies, vampires, or werewolves -- just people, who have enough evilness lurking withing to need anything else.
I read this story in one sitting, and it kept me moderately entertained. The characters were a little one-dimensional and simplistic, but we're realistically sketched out enough that I really grew to care about their plight and emotions. Despite a few typos (pretty typical of independent ebooks these days), it was very well written, and crafted with nice phrasing and imagery. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because the plot was a little too straightforward and predictable, but I still enjoyed it enough to recommend it to science fiction fans.
I'm not sure who decided to put this book free this month but THANKYOU! I typically prefer reading about a disaster before and during its action.but I fell in love with this story almost right away.it's well written, great character development and certainly the kind of book that, terrifying as it may be, that makes you really think.thanks to it being free,I read this.and because it's was so well written,I now am going to search other books from this author.now, it's hard to believe that I, NOT a lover of sequels, am going to say this but please, Mr author, please write a book two!I will pay....if not, thanks for a wonderful adventure, no matter how dismal, my last two days has been enthralled in!
This was an enjoyable read, one that takes you into what happens AFTER the smoke clears and the world is forever changed. I do wonder if some of the characters were closer to stereotypes than flesh-and-blood people, but it does give you some hope that we won't all descend into chaos when or if something happens.

Sadly, I found the character of King to be far TOO realistic of what could be a common structure after such a cataclysm. You know you want to hate the bad guy, but you keep wondering where you might find yourself along that scale.

The whole laboratory storyline took it a bit over the top to me. I find it hard to believe that such a place would be absolutely unknown ten years after a world-ending event. After ten years, the scavengers are going to have just about everywhere well-searched. Also in hinting that there were other places of hidden control, at least up to a certain point? I could not quite grasp why there would not be more of an attempt to at least do SOME rebuilding, rather than let everyone outside essentially drop dead. This storyline is one area that knocked the book down to four stars for me.

The weather changes were only lightly touched upon, and possibly could have been a bit more used. It seemed like the characters were surprised by the storm and its ferocity, though I am sure it was not the only one in ten years. Also, would travel be that limited? Would there really be so little interchange between people from different areas?

Overall, though, I thought the book to be an interesting concept into humanity, both good and bad, after civilization is gone.
No spoilers. Just a quick & dirty opinion

It's a pretty good, post-apocalyptic story. As others have noted, it's set in the Boston area after a meteor event (a few years down the line). The story follows three different groups of survivors. I've got mixed opinions on the book overall. There are parts that really shine. But I didn't care for the story line with the scientists. And I thought the ending was a little weak. Having said that, I would give this author another try on a different book. I think he has potential.
I was a little taken aback by any character who thinks that children (especially teenagers) should remain innocent even in a post-apocalyptic world, even a father. It seems more reasonable and more likely that a father would prefer his children to have the best chance at surviving and thus would teach them rules and skills that they would need. But this father literally shelters them and doesn't even teach them to not speak to strangers because he doesn't want them to know what the world is really like. While the children's innocence did create some tension because it put the group in some precarious situations, it also seemed completely unbelievable that the group would have survived that long with them acting that way. Thus the whole story seemed unrealistic.
